Cheers to Year 28!

There are usually two times a year I sit down and reflect: my birthday and New Year's Eve. Lucky for me, these two dates fall almost exactly six months from each other. This birthday hits a little different though. Year 27 was full of obstacles and many hardships, not just for me, but the entire world. However, I also experienced exciting opportunities, learned more than I thought possible, and grew in areas I didn't even know I had an interest in as I ventured into owning my very own freelance graphic design/social media management business, Kendra Cersosimo Creative.

What started as a quarantine hobby, turned into a passion and a creative outlet I didn't know I wanted. What started out as an exciting challenge to work with one stranger in Florida turned into working with 30+ clients on nearly 100 projects! Here are my top 3 lessons my freelance self learned this year:

1. Get Uncomfortable

I found that the greatest highs and lessons learned from my business came from taking a risk and moving outside of my comfort zone. As someone who loves routine and consistency, I've found that my proudest moments and greatest rewards came as results of getting uncomfortable – whether it be meeting potential clients for the first time over Zoom calls, dipping my toes into Instagram reels, or writing my first blog post (I've been putting this off as long as possible).

2. Never Stop Learning

From podcasts to YouTube tutorials and online webinars to personal development books, I've learned more about becoming a freelancer in the last 365 days than I ever thought possible. Here's a few of my favorite (and much needed) resources: one-on-one meetings with the South Dakota Small Business Development Center, a legal webinar that touched on website policy pages and terms of service pages (sounds riveting I'm sure), and a variety of personal development books (currently halfway through The Defining Decade and loving it)!

Below is a list of books I have read recently or am currently reading/listenening to. If you have any suggestions for more, I'd love to add them to my list!

The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile 100%
Get Out of your Head by Jennie Allen 100%
The Bible 60%
Love Does by Bob Goff 84%
The Defining Decade 58%
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*** by Mark Manson 56%

3. Find the Good in Social Media

This year, I've also had a love-hate relationship with social media. While social media is an area of my business that I freelance to clients, my personal social media accounts are oftentimes an area I try to avoid as it doesn't take long for me to fall down the rabbit hole of comparison and wasting time scrolling through newsfeeds. However, I've been pleasantly surprised with the wealth of information, design inspiration, and helpful insight I've found by joining Facebook groups and following other freelance designers on Instagram. Speaking of social media...  *Shameless plug coming your way*... if you haven't already, please like my business page on Facebook, Kendra Cersosimo Creative

Today I'm welcoming another year around the sun and all of the uncomfortable growth, new opportunities, and tough lessons that come with it. Today and everyday, I'm beyond grateful for the amount of love and unwavering support from all of the people in my corner. Excited to see what my 28th year has in store!
